Q: Do I have to be a resident of Spain to buy a property?

No. Anyone who is a resident of an EU country can buy a property in Spain. You will need a Spanish identity number which is very simple to obtain - your lawyer can do this for you.

Q: Can my UK state pension be paid to my Spanish bank account?

Yes. You will need to contact the DSS overseas pension department and they will send you the appropriate forms.

Q: Do I need a UK lawyer as well as a Spanish one?

No, it is only necessary to have a Spanish lawyer but try to use one who speaks fluent English!

Q: Will I be required to pay taxes on my Spanish property?

Yes! If you require further information we are happy to recommend a number of tax accountants who will give you independent advice specific to your circumstances.

Q: Do I need a Spanish will?

Absolutely, your lawyer can draw a will up for you at the same time as he does the purchase contracts.

Q: How do I open a bank account in Spain?

The process is similar to the UK. You will need to take along your passport, 2 additional forms of identification and a proof of address.

Q: How do I apply for a mortgage in Spain?

As in the UK to satisfy the conditions of a mortgage you will need to demonstrate an ability to meet the repayments (see Financial Service Guide)
